Knowledge and Sharing Circles

World Indigenous Peoples Conference on Education 2022

Knowledge and Sharing Circles

WIPCE knowledge and sharing circles (KSC’s – previously known as master classes) were introduced during WIPCE 2017 in Toronto and are designed and targeted to enhance the process of knowledge creation and sharing during by focusing on a designated area of interest and need, within an environment that extends beyond the traditional workshop approach. The name of Master Classes has been changed to incorporate Indigenous Knowings and processes.

WIPCE handover from Toronto to Adelaide

The WIPCE knowledge and sharing circles (KSCs) are designed to promote and privilege Indigenous education systems and the knowledge, values and practices derived from such systems. It is recognised that there is no single or homogenised Indigenous education system but rather that there are principles and values that apply to all Indigenous cultures and ontologies including those enshrined in instruments such as the Coolangatta Statement (CS) and the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). WIPCE KSCs allow for people to have time to listen to others, share each other’s experiences and to yarn and share in a way that we do as Indigenous peoples. There is limited structure with people free to speak and to be reflective. The focus is not on one or two presenters but facilitators who lead collaborative yarning and sharing. Each of the two KSCs will produce a written statement to share through the WIPCE International Council webpage (https://wipce.net/). Each WIPCE KSC’s will have a maximum of 50 participants and will be facilitated by highly skilled and experienced facilitators drawn from the WIPCE family. Each WIPCE knowledge sharing circle will provide a report of their deliberations to the full WIPCE plenary.
